KevinSim,

What's your number? 1-10?

You'll note that in the post above, Ed Gobble (Book of Abraham apologist) was the last person to cast a vote.

I can strengthen the evidence through logical reasoning that leads to the logical conclusion that Anubis with a jackal snout was indeed featured in the original vignette of Facsimile No. 3, but first, please review the following:
Shulem wrote:
In 1856 two of the Mormon mummies and some papyri were sold to the St. Louis Museum and later examined by Professor Gustavus Seyffarth where the exhibit was put on display and later taken to Chicago in 1863. Egyptologist Seyffarth provides the first professional description of the Mormon papyrus to almost certainly include the lost vignette of Facsimile No. 3 which features Hôr (Horus) being ushered into the presense of Osiris:

CATALOGUE OF THE ST. LOUIS MUSEUM

"According to Prof. Seyffarth, the papyrus roll is not a record, but an invocation to the Deity Osiris, in which occurs the name of the person, (Horus,) and a picture of the attendant spirits, introducing the dead to the Judge, Osiris"

Here we have the papyrus of Facsimile No. 3 being described in wonderful fashion! The man Horus is being brought into the divine presence of Osiris and the "attendant spirits" (Anubis, Maat, and Isis) are ever present. Professor Seyffarth was familiar with the Egyptian language using the most recent conventions thanks to scholars abroad -- and he certainly was able to recognize Egyptian deities.

Professor Seyffarth also wrote:

"The museum contains . . . . Egyptian mummies, statuettes, papyrus scroll . . . . Visitors will find also some large fragments of the Egyptian paprus scrolls with hieratic (priestly) inscriptions and drawings representing judgment of the dead many Egyptian gods and sacred animals with certain chapters from the old Egyptian sacred books." (Daily Missouri Democrat, St. Louis, Sept. 10, 1856)

Notice there is no mention of a missing jackal snout. I have to assume the papyrus depicted the god in his usual form. Anubis ALWAYS has a jackal head, no exceptions. I don't trust Joseph Smith's Facsimile presentation. I believe he pulled a fast one based on everything I understand at this point. What he planned to do with the papyrus in explaining a discrepancy between it and the Facsimile is anyone's guess. Maybe he just kept it locked in his office while biding his time. No one would ever know better.

Deductive reasoning of Seyffarth's statement of Facsimile No. 3 proves Anubis was depicted on the original papyrus:

"According to Prof. Seyffarth, the papyrus roll is not a record, but an invocation to the Deity Osiris, in which occurs the name of the person, (Horus,) and a picture of the attendant spirits, introducing the dead to the Judge, Osiris"

1. Seyffarth could tell that the papyrus was not a record of Abraham or a document representing his religion
2. Seyffarth knew the papyrus was an invocation to the god Osiris -- funerary spells of the Book of the Dead
3. Seyffarth could read the name Horus in the hieroglyphic writing in the label
4. Seyffarth recognized that the scene contained attendant spirits introducing a dead man before Osiris

FACT 1: The scene of Facsimile No. 3 pertains to the Egyptian religion
FACT 2: The scene is not earthly but figurative of the afterlife
FACT 3: The person Smith labeled as "Shulem" is really a dead man by the name of Horus
FACT 4: The seated Judge is Osiris
FACT 5: Attendant spirits introduce the dead man (Horus) before Judge, Osiris

Seyffarth recognized that the seated Judge was none other than Osiris. Although not stated, he must also have recognized that the person behind him was a goddess -- whether he knew her by Isis or Hathor, we don't know -- but we can be safe in knowing that Seyffarth knew that she was a goddess standing behind the Judge awaiting the procession as was Osiris for the "attendants" to introduce Horus before the judgement seat. The "attendants" were none other than Maat and Anubis, both of which flanked the dead man (Horus) while ushering him into the presence of Osiris.

Therefore, we may conclude that Seyffarth viewed the two "attendants" flanking Horus as gods, persons not of the earth and were equal and divine. This means that Anubis as portrayed in the original vignette was his regular self -- the familiar jackal headed god of the ancient Egyptian afterlife.

1. Seyffarth did not view Anubis as a negro!

2. Seyffarth did not view Anubis as a slave!

3. Seyffarth DID view Anubis as an attendant spirit, a god of the Egyptian pantheon!

Our friend Tamis provided me with a couple of examples of ones similar to Facsimile 3

POSTING THIS FOR REFERENCE:

The New and Complete Dictionary of the English Language 1775

ANU'BIS An Egyptian idol with a dog's head

I wonder if Smith had the nose hacked off Hedlock's printing plate because someone pointed out that a dog headed idol is an Egyptian god rather than a slave?

Hmmm.
