61st Anniversary of the Launch of Vanguard 1

Post by _richardMdBorn »

On 3/17/58 the U.S. launched its second satellite. Vanguard 1 was the first satellite to carry solar cells; the solar powered transmitter worked for six years. Sputniks 1 and 2 had batteries which worked for three weeks and six days, respectively. The batteries on Explorer 1 worked for four months.

My Dad designed Vanguard 1. He used to tinker with it on our dining room table.

PM me if you’re interested in watching my appearance on C-SPAN or listening to me being interviewed on a nationally syndicated radio program (plus appearances on SpyCast and the Milt Rosenberg Show). See ya!
