Sub is just recycling the old cigarette industry argument. If statistics showed that a smoker’s odds of developing fatal lung cancer were triple those of non-smokers, he’d still argue there was no proof that cigarettes ever killed anyone. I spent some time looking at study data, some of which are based on the database he refers to, and they all show the same thing: the death rate in sprinklered fires is substantially lower than that in fires involving smoke alarms but no sprinklers. That is good evidence that sprinkler save lives, even if it is not possible to prove in an individual case that a person would have died had there been no sprinklers.

As for what fire chiefs think, their organizations promote sprinklers.

The only folks who seem to actively oppose sprinklers are builders and developers and, in the case of retrofits, building owners. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that those folks would be Sub’s clients.
