I only know of one poster here who is in TX. It's clear that Harvey is making landfall as I write this. Cat 4 is no joke. The hurricane that I went through was only a Cat 2 when it hit our area. I can't imagine the pounding you all are taking right now.

If you or a loved one is in the area, I hope you and yours are tucked away some place safe.

Meanwhile...prayers and good thoughts to you in the Lone Star State!

As I read this it is a cat 4 hurricane. All that can be done right now stay away from windows, and don't go outside. Be safe.

Has anyone spotted any news report that families are being evacuated to Huston Astrodome? I don't see anything at the moment.

If you do see a report like that will you please post it here?

It would be a weird deja vu with the Superdome after Katrina. People actually stayed in the Astrodome as well.

I know and that's why I'm on the watch for it. In 2005, I got hold of an opportunity to serve the families who were housed in the Astrodome, had talked to coordinators in the area and everything. I was packing up my materials and when I went to work and informed them of my plan, my employers basically threatened my job if I left. So I didn't go.

I'm free to go now if the need arises or even donate support materials from afar.

Explaining now...when evacuees are placed in a large shelter such as the Astrodome, they are provided with various resource organizations to meet with. What they are not provided with is childcare or teachers for their young children and that is where someone like me can be of use, so that parents can get to their resource people without taking their children into meetings. Another issue that needs to be addressed is the psychological and emotional well being of the children who have abruptly needed to flee their own familiar surroundings, someone like me and others like me, are prepared to support children in that regard as well.

ETA: If I had it to do over again, I would have told my employers to stuff it and that I intended to do what I was called to do regarding child advocacy. I regret not doing so to this day, and I'm someone who tries to avoid taking actions that will result in regret.

Dallas! Dallas has the shelters for Harvey evacuees.

http://www.nbcdfw.com/weather/stories/D ... 91643.html

So...I can get info from the Dallas area association if there is a call for assistance.

:-)

Well now I'm reading the stories about Huston and how emergency services are overwhelmed with rescue requests and efforts. There was no call to evacuate Huston? What the hell?

And here I thought evacuees from Corpus Christi would be sent to Huston. I assume they'll all be sent up to Dallas and overwhelm Dallas services.

What. a. mess.

I'm about to jump in my car and head west, but I wouldn't even know where to start to actually help out. Meanwhile, Megachurch pastor Joel Osteen has locked up his 16,000 seat megachurch stadium as other smaller churches and mosques are opening their doors.

It says it's inaccessible due to flooding.

Where to start actually helping out? It depends on what you can do. I suppose you show up at the convention center in Dallas.

Or you wait for a call to go out for volunteers to serve in specific ways.

I know that's what it says, but no one who actually lives in the area is buying it because Churches in that same area aren't flooded. Osteen's place is enormous. Even if it were in the flood zone of a few feet, it could still safely house thousands of people trying to get out of the water.

Actually there was a call to evacuate Houston, but not Huston. Probably the cause of all the confusion over the past 4 days.

Gov (Abott) called for the evacuation but the liberal mayor rejected the Gov's position. Hard to understand then, even more so now.

The Gov didn't order a mandatory evacuation, he only encouraged people in low lying areas to evacuate: "if you’re in an area between Corpus Christi and Houston, you need to strongly consider evacuating."

Republican Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said the city should not be evacuated. His argument was that the Mayor knew best and the general rule is that "we say run from water and hide from wind" but that the water we run from is storm surge, not rain water.

The Mayor defended his decision thusly:

Quote:
“Quite frankly, leaving your homes, getting on the streets, you’ll be putting yourself in more danger and not making yourself safer,” he said. “And so, we’re just asking people to hunker down.”

The following day, as the storm’s devastating toll came into better focus, Turner defended his call for people to stay in place.

“There was a lot of conversation about the direction in which hurricane Harvey was going to go,” he said at a news conference Sunday. “No one knew which direction it was going to go. So it’s kind of different to send people away from danger when you don’t know where the danger is.”

He added that trying to evacuate the city in such a short time would have been logistically “crazy,” as history has shown.

“Remember the last time we evacuated, there was a great deal of confusion, great deal of chaos,” the mayor said. “There were people that were going to Austin that were on the road 10 to 12 hours, if not longer. There were people who ran out of gas on their way — a great deal of confusion.”

TV Evangelist Joel Osteen refused to open his arena to the flood victims.

Hurricane Rita changed a lot of minds about evacuations.

Heck with him. Don't like him. He shouldn't have to have his arm twisted to do the right thing.

So another thing. There are tons of boat owners from my own state on the way down to TX. I saw video of others basically convoying with boats on I-90W (?). Anyway, that all sounds good on paper, but what happens when they get there and realize there is little access to fuel for both their boats and trucks, and also strain food resources? I guess they just have to deal.

Yeah well his congregation will probably accept any darn explanation that comes out of his mouth, but that was his true colors right there. Prosperity gospel, indeed.
