This year has already been depressing enough, with San Francisco festooned with tie-dyed banners celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love making me feel older than dirt.

Last week I was the guide for an open top bus tour of the city for some 3rd graders from a local elementary school. We drove down Haight Street, and I pointed out the apartment where Jimi Hendrix lived with his girlfriend. A young boy raised his hand. I thought he was going to ask who Jimi Hendrix was.

Instead he said "My grandfather went to school with Jimi Hendrix."

Thanks a lot, kid.

Neil Diamond and his wife thanked his fans Tuesday, a day after the legendary singer revealed he was retiring from touring after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

The diagnosis forced Diamond to cancel a previously announced tour in Australia and New Zealand in March.

Linda Ronstadt (age 71) -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Ronstadt

Also can't sing a note now due to Parkinson's.

She looked kind of like Anna Paquin in her youth.

Johann Sebastian Bach will be 333 this year.

Can't just use initials or you get this: Joseph Smith

With a two key repeat, you can do this: Joseph Smith Joseph Smith Joseph Smith Joseph Smith Joseph Smith Joseph Smith Joseph Smith Joseph Smith Joseph Smith...

In 1975/76, I worked on a Nuclear Safeguards Initiative in California. We put on several benefit concert with Linda Ronstadt, arranged through a guy who knew her through her early days with the Stone Ponies.

I got to see her do a couple of shows at The Troubadour. This was when she was being produced by Peter Asher, and did a lot of country-flavored Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry covers.

The Troubadour is an old small venue, one of the best clubs for live music in West Hollywood. (I saw Dan Hicks fall off the stage at the Troub) That night, Ronstadt was in great voice, and it was one of the great intimate live shows I've seen. The scuttlebutt was that she was a little like Judy Garland, with an abdomen for belting out songs but not necessarily built to be svelte. Consequently it was whispered she was doing some uppers at the time for weight loss. I could not see any signs of that. She sang great.

My stepmother was a singer, and watching her lose her voice as she got older was hard, because it was a part of her self-esteem and identity. But they have a lot longer professional life than athletes.

She's easily my favorite female singer of all time.

Holy crap you're right. I remember my Mom singing to her albums when we lived in Germany in the mid-70's. "You're not good, you're no good, you're no good, baby you're no good."
