Hogan's Heroes and Staying True

Post by _moksha »

Wonder if Sergeant Schultz's famous line, "I see nothing, I know nothing" could ever be incorporated into a General Conference talk as a method of staying true to the Church?

There are people who know all the controversial issues of the church but stay in it because of the witness they receive from the Spirit. For people who stay true to the witness they receive and continue to grow closer to their heavenly father. There is no issue or offense that would cause them to leave.

Or fact.

This could be said of any adherent who remains steadfast in any belief, and should raise flags in the minds of those who believe it to be a good thing.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

This is the spiritual testimony wall. We see it in other religions as well as Mormonism. Spiritual experiences don't come with interpretations. The church teaches members how to interpret them in the church's favor. If they then can get them to have a good spiritual experience, they will interpret most likely as the church wants them to. The accompanying emotions that go with it act as powerful glue to attach to that interpretation. It is hard at this point to see any evidence against that belief with an open mind, and It's hard to get someone to properly separate out the interpretation from the spiritual experience. Until they do, they will never see the truth in front of them.

I call it a spiritual box, and the instructions for getting out are on the outside of the box.

If you want the truth about God whom better to ask than God? If you're an Atheist then no answer is acceptable.

I wonder why so many of those who asked God cannot agree?

Maybe Ballard could add to his "stay in the boat" metaphor by explaining how some peter priesthood wrote him a letter. In the letter, peter relates how he is so gosh darned converted that he doesn't want to waste his time looking for anything other than church approved materials on the internet. Peter has set up a gospel battleship, strong and true, so that all he knows and sees are church heros of the past and present, conquering satan, leading us to victory. In effect peter doesn't see anything or know anything other than the "truth" as Ballard sees it.
