Dallin Oaks anti LGBT address in Hawaii?

Post by _Maksutov »

Saw something about this online recently but can't find Oaks' remarks. Anyone? Bueller?

“A scholar said he could not read the Book of Mormon, so we shouldn’t be shocked that scholars say the papyri don’t translate and/or relate to the Book of Abraham. Doesn’t change anything. It’s ancient and historical.” ~ Hanna Seariac

Along with these challenges—and caused by them—we are confronted by a culture of evil and personal wickedness in the world. This includes:
Dishonesty
Pornography
Perversions
The diminishing of marriage and childbearing
The increasing frequency and power of the culture and phenomenon of lesbian, gay, and transgender lifestyles and values
Finally, you live in a culture that focuses on individual rights and desires rather than the responsibilities and cooperative efforts that have built our societies.

Has Mr Oaks chastised the second Mrs Oaks and the second Mrs Nelson for their personal wickedness in never having born children?

We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

Stephen Smoot better watch out. He's next, especially if Louis "Woody" Midgley has his way.

I've wondered for a long time why men with such serious responsibilities like Oaks are still clinging to homophobia. They have had the time and opportunity to unlearn these misconceptions. Maybe deeply held misogyny is part of that.

If a person is bi or gay, but raised to abide by hetero norms with moral absolutes, they may interpret those feelings for the same sex as a universal type of temptation, something that everyone experiences.

But misogyny might make homophobia worse. If, for example, a gay man is suppressing that, and also sees women in very strict roles, it can warp intimate relationships entirely until he will not know how a healthy one looks. So when he does see a loving gay couple, caring for each other in every way, it won't compute as a valid relationship. It remains unappreciated, foreign...there must be something wrong.

But if a homophobic person has healthy relationships with men and women, and nurtures a healthy intimate relationship, maybe he'll be more likely to recognize that in gay relationships, and work his or her mind out of the homophobia.

This is yet another way sexism and homophobia are, in my opinion, deeply embedded into Mormonism.

I suggest mental health counselling for the first 15, their wives, then all GA's and their spouses- gotta start somewhere!

Oaks should have taken the line that the Mormon church is definitely toxic to one's mental health, then announced his resignation from the Morg-that would have been newsworthy and difficult for the Morg newsroom to spin!
