....Just thought someone should take a moment to point out the obvious. Imagine trying to live on 16% of the average US annual income, and then being asked by someone who lives on 6.6 times as much as you do to give them 10% of your income in order to be a member of their silly club.

Indeed. In reference to the African situation, Peterson recently stated that people don't have to pay to go to the temple. His evidence? If you have zero income, then you are paying a full tithe of $0, and you qualify to go to the temple. Therefore, payment is not required to have ordinances done.

So again, the two links have no relation to the OP, except to add the distressing news that it looks like the lds church counts the labor of the people being helped as part of the value of the donations.

Returning to the topic, why did Anderson feel the need to assert "we are not a wealthy people"? It is clearly not true.

Yeah, here is some stuff from one of the Mental links...

So I checked [claims the Apologist].

•The World Health Organization estimates that 884 million people worldwide don’t have access to clean water. This is a huge problem in Africa, not only because of water-borne diseases but because kids who spend hours each day walking to and from the nearest well to fill old gasoline cans with water cannot attend school. According to church records, in the past seven years, more than four million Africans in 17 countries have gained access to clean drinking water through Mormon humanitarian efforts to sink or rehabilitate boreholes.

And so? Did they do this completely by themselves? Let's see the proof of that cause I doubt it, so we have no idea what the "Mormons" did.

•More than 34,000 physically handicapped African kids now have wheelchairs through the same Mormon-sponsored humanitarian program. To see a legless child whose knuckles have become calloused through walking on his hands lifted into a wheelchair may be the best way to fully understand the liberation this brings.

Again, what program and what exactly did they do, so we have no idea what the "Mormons" did.

•Millions of children, meanwhile, have now been vaccinated against killer diseases like measles as the church has sponsored or assisted with projects in 22 African countries.

Again, what programs, how much did they put in... so we have no idea what the "Mormons" did.

•More than 126,000 Africans have had their sight restored or improved through Mormon partnership with African eye care professionals in providing training, equipment and supplies.

Again, what program and how much did they put in... so we have no idea what the "Mormons" did. Did they pay for operations, or just buy some glasses?

•Another 52,000 Africans have been trained to help newborns who otherwise would never take a first breath. Training in neonatal resuscitation has also been a big project for Mormons in Africa.

And how was this done? No idea so... so we have no idea what the "Mormons" really did.

•Then, of course, there is the tragedy of AIDS. A couple of weeks ago I attended a dinner where the Utah AIDS Foundation honored James O. Mason, former United States Assistant Secretary of Health. When he was working for the Center for Disease Control in 1984, a project to research the epidemiology and treatment of AIDS was established at the Hospital Mama Yempo in Kinshasha, Zaire. After visiting the hospital and examining the children and adults with AIDS, Mason described the death rate and the associated infections from AIDS as “horrific.” Mason, a Mormon, knows quite a bit about AIDS and a great deal about Africa.

Thank those like Bill Clinton and his foundation who have done more than the Mormons ever could or will. A Mormon "knows quite a bit about aids and ... Africa". OMG! What was his stance on it? I highly doubt he did anything. Check out this analysis which was done in 1990, a few years later:

Abstract
In a prospective study of adult admissions to the Department of Internal Medicine at Mama Yemo Hospital, Kinshasa, Zaire in late 1988, 129 women and 122 men were screened for HIV infection. Fifty per cent were found to be seropositive, with half of the seropositives meeting the World Health Organization (WHO) clinical AIDS definition. The HIV seropositives had a mortality rate of 50%, which was significantly higher (P = 0.004) than the 30% mortality rate seen in the seronegative group. Direct costs during hospitalization did not differ ($60.30 for HIV seropositives, $56.50 for HIV seronegatives), but pre-hospitalization expenses were significantly higher in the HIV-seropositive group ($170 for HIV seropositives, $110 for HIV seronegatives). Years of productive life lost due to death were also significantly higher for HIV seropositives versus HIV seronegatives (30.6 versus 21.3 years; P = 0.0007), and 73% of the premature mortality in the study population was attributable to HIV infection. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2252561

Who was responsible for negotiating a lower price for AIDS related drugs outside the US? Bill Clinton. Could this fact have had an impact on why the US got involved there?

Last year, two United States Embassy employees here, of a full-time staff of 250, died of AIDS.

And of course there is this letter, where Mason claims that AIDS was "no threat" in Africa or to the world in 1986... https://larouchepub.com/eiw/public/1986 ... _mason.pdf

And the annual budget for PHS for AIDS went from 5 million to 100 million long before Mason was in his position as Secretary. He was doing his job and actually implimenting Secretary Heckler's policies. Here is an interview about her and her struggle with AIDS funding and getting people to listen about it, but Mason isn't mentioned at all... (though the CDC is of course) https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontlin ... ckler.html

Funny how the real facts always get in the way of Mormon Apologetics.
