Should Church Leaders have social media accounts?

Post by _I have a question »

On the one hand...
Regarding technology, he said cell phones “should be your slaves, not your masters … cut it back and rejoin the world of those who talk face to face.”

In case you've missed it, the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a new Instagram account - and he could possibly be the oldest user on the social media app.

LDS Church President Russell M. Nelson, along with his counselors in the First Presidency and all members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, can now be found on Instagram.

Can you really run with the hare AND the hounds? Should Church Leaders not have the courage of their convictions and reject the use of social media by themselves and by the Church? Social media is incredibly addictive and very few people have the self discipline to not let it become a time hole.
“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

There is no way he’s the oldest user on Instagram. Just another trumped up claim by a false prophet.

The Church is being less than truthful once again. There are many users on Instagram older than Nelson.

Yes, but you have the benefit of knowing how to use internet applications and the desire to tell truths that are not faith promoting and therefore not helpful.

He’s playing up the youthful and hip old guy angle.
What’s up fellow teenagers!
Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.
