What do Ancient Alien theories, the search for the lost continent of Atlantis, and Mormon theology have in common? They all promote the racist idea that people of color are incapable of creating complex civilizations without outside intervention.
While ancient aliens have been a compelling fictional device in popular media since the early 1900s, there is no evidence to support it as a reality— but that hasn’t stopped amateur archaeologists and bad-faith writers promoting such theories as a “controversial alternative” to academic narratives to sell books and merchandise. Similar ideas are promoted by the Book of Mormon, which claims indigenous Americans are actually ancient Israeli migrants who were eventually wiped out by non-white natives. Far from harmless, these baseless claims muddy the waters of truth and provide intellectual justification for racist policies and behavior.
In this talk, we will examine the history of ancient aliens, its accidental father H.P. Lovecraft, and how this fictional construct has been cynically promoted by charlatans as historical truth. We will also examine how this and other false theories of “lost continents” and prehistoric European migration to the New World are exploding in popularity in the present day as part of a misinformation campaign by white supremacists.

It has Lovecraft? Dang that would be fun to go to. I clicked the link and saw a couple of my SLC friends are going.

Yeah, Lovecraft was a virulent racist.
