The problem, of course, is that while it may fool Peterson it will fool nobody who has even cracked the spine of a book on actual biology.

Peterson doesn't read more than the first 10 or 20 pages of any book he posts about, based on his quoted page numbers, so no spines are ever even mildly bent, let alone cracked. When he can't plagiarize he really doesn't have much to say.

Interesting. There certainly is no sign that he drank very deeply in this case.

One of the funny things about creationists is that they are really, in most cases, extremely uninterested in biology. They are interested in one thing, and one thing only: the suggestion that evolutionary theory has invalidated some part of their views on the existence of ghostly supernatural forces. If there is no Casper, after all, there is no morality or ultimate purpose (or so they say).

So, being interested in it only for its implications vis-à-vis the Casper question, they just don't have a very long span of attention when somebody starts talking about how Hox genes regulate segmented development, or how lineages of ancient giraffids or dicynodonts radiated, or how long it takes to fix an advantageous mutation in a population of a given size. They are mostly interested in the executive summary, which they hope will read something like "there is a fascinating debate going on among biologists about evolution, and special creation is not only not dead, but is rapidly becoming the only plausible explanation for the diversity of life."

Of course, to know whether that executive summary is balderdash, you've got to know some biology. But they're just not very interested. They're not curious about living things for the sake of understanding living things. Their curiosity extends only so far as asking whether science says that Casper is not real.

What they miss, of course, is that Casperology, having no empirical basis, simply isn't a substitute for empirical biological research. Casperologists of many stripes have, in fact, come to understand that the Harvey comic books should not be taken literally and that if they are to be believed in, then it is their other content on which one must focus: Baby Huey, for the dangers of naïvété and ignorance; Wendy the Good Little Witch, for the hazards of unintended consequences; Hot Stuff, for the burden of moral choice; and, of course, Little Dot, for the existential confrontation of the apparent meaninglessness of the universe.

No, the Harvey books will not tell you the history of life on earth. They are not science books. But nobody can question that they embody some of the collected wisdom of the ages.

You've got their number, Puck. Your explanations of religionist psychology are dead on, in my opinion.

Ah, I think he eventually figured out he wasn't doing himself any favors with his ill-mannered tantrums.

It really is a shame. He does seem like someone who COULD understand what a fraud ID Creationism is. But he doesn't wish to understand, and there is no way to force the issue with someone who simply doesn't care to learn anything.

From their mindset, they already possess the truth and real authority. The shame is no one else is agreeing with them in their truth and so everyone else are the one's who do not wish to learn. It's interesting how interesting self-interest is.
