SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A woman who claims in a lawsuit that her father sexually abused her as a child said Thursday that Mormon church leaders allowed the sexual assault to continue by failing to report it to police.

Kristy Johnson said at a news conference that her now-deceased mother told local church leaders in Utah and California about the abuse multiple times during the 1960-1970s. Her father, Melvin Kay Johnson, a church employee who worked for the religious education arm of the faith, was relocated to different cities by the church after each report, but police were not contacted, she alleges in a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Utah.

Johnson, now in her mid-50s and living in La Habra, California, said she finally reported the abuse to police in California in 1986 when she returned from a Mormon mission. Her father was never arrested, but the church kicked him out. He was allowed back one year later after he went before a church court and persuaded them he had repented, the woman said.

Melvin Kay Johnson, who now lives in Lehi, Utah, did not respond to a voicemail left at a listed phone number.

The source story: https://www.sltrib.com/religion/local/2018/06/28/father-molested-his/

The significance of the story is not just sex abuse since that happens everywhere in every group. This is the story of the abuse being reported to multiple bishops and despite knowing what happened, they failed to report it.

The story follows on the heels of yet another Tribune story about abuse being reported to a number of Church leaders multiple times and no police report being filed.

IMO, here's the nub of the problem. The LDS church claims that they don't need to notify authorities because they firmly believe that they have been given a divine methodology to fix the problem (you know, spiritual gifts and all that) when in fact it never works. There comes a time when people simply stop believing that the LDS church has any connection with reality. That's what we're up against.

Yes, there's a real mentality among the judges in Israel that those in their stewardship must forgive when the leader believes the offender has repented, that they are obligated to forgive and even forget. Yet there is a fundamental problem with someone having that much power: they will tend to believe what benefits them. So, if a violater says they are sorry, it is easier to believe the problem is solved than to believe that the hard work of enforcement is necessary.

Mormon leadership believe strongly in the practice of laying on the hands.

I thought the updated policy was that any allegations of sexual abuse were to be reported.
