Anyone know Jan Shipps?

Post by _deacon blues »

I've been reading about Jan Shipps lately. She's a very interesting person: a non-member historian who has been able to warm up to faithful Mormon scholars, and even Church leaders. I'm impressed. How did she do it?

she called Mormonism 'another christian tradition" and has been kind in her analysis of mo'ism, thus the byu and apologists invited her to speak ,be on panels - a friendly historian , much like margaret barker who sees good in the lds temple business.

jan has a book on Mormonism but calling it christian got her accepted.

The fact that a person of this calibre and character, a valid historian who really does understand Mormonism, and yet the Holy Ghost won't convert her is more telling to me now than anything she will write about it. If it's one person the Holy Ghost ought to be overwhelming overpowering to about Mormonism's truthfulness, Shipps, of all people, ought to be the one.

Jan Shipps is not interested in whether Mormonism is true or false. She studies Mormonism because it exists and she is interested in it. She is kind to the church so they keep giving her special access to documents for her research. The church is kind to her because she gives them the appearance of academic legitimacy.

Please tell us more. Do you have some insight or information the rest of us do not?

Not really. She takes a nuanced view of Mormonism; like Prince, Wotherspoon, Bushman and others, but she just hasn't been dunked. The truthfulness of the church isn't really relevant to these types, as long as they can keep their audience that thinks they are amazingly clever. I'm not the only person to feel this way about Shipps. The guys at Signature Books do as well.
