I know future travel is theoretically possible but, again, intuition kicks in and says there's got to be some hitch that would prevent it. Clocks running fast or slow is one thing, but leaving earth only to return in 30 years and find your child is older than you... that's just weird!

Weird perhaps - but absolutely factual. And it's not just theoretical.

Designers and operators of the satellite GPS that your cell phone uses to help you find a Starbucks (or the local LDS chapel) in a strange city deal with the real effects of both special and general relativity time dilation every day.

One of our posters on MDB, richardMdBorn, is an expert in GPS. He has written a book and gives invited lectures on the subject now and then.

Type in < special relativity twin paradox > as a google search string and see what comes up.

Choyo Chagas is Chairman of the Big Four, the ruler of the planet from "The Bull's Hour" ( Russian: Час Быка), a social science fiction novel written by Soviet author and paleontologist Ivan Yefremov in 1968.
Six months after its publication Soviet authorities banned the book and attempted to remove it from libraries and bookshops.
